DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS: Upscaling Technology Update for PC Gamers in 2026

The latest DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS update as of October 2026: DLSS 5, FSR 4.1 for the RX 6000, and XeSS 3. Check the feature differences and supported GPUs before you upgrade.

Nvidia has released DLSS 5, AMD has brought FSR 4.1 to the RX 6000, and Intel has expanded XeSS 3.

The DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS race on PC has shifted quickly throughout 2026. Nvidia, AMD, and Intel have all released major updates in recent months. Here is where things stand as of October 27, 2026.

All three technologies render games at a lower resolution, then reconstruct the image to match your display. The result is higher fps with image quality close to native. DLSS only runs on RTX cards, FSR is open to nearly all modern GPUs, and XeSS works best on Intel Arc. The biggest difference is which GPUs each one supports.

DLSS 4.5 and DLSS 5 From Nvidia

Nvidia announced DLSS 4.5 at CES 2026 with a second-generation transformer model for Super Resolution. All GeForce RTX GPUs can use it through the Nvidia app in more than 400 games and apps. Players only need to turn on the override in the app.

Multi Frame Generation now has a 6X mode. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation automatically adjusts the number of generated frames to match a target fps. This feature is for GeForce RTX 50 and requires Game Ready driver 595.97 WHQL or later.

Ray Reconstruction also moves up to DLSS 4.5 and supports all GPUs from RTX 20 through RTX 50. TechSpot’s testing shows performance on par with the previous version, but with better image quality. Owners of older cards do not need to worry about a drop in fps.

DLSS 5 was announced at GTC 2026 with a neural rendering model that improves lighting and materials. This feature, called 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, debuts in NBA 2K27 for all GeForce RTX 50 GPUs. DLSS 5 works as an addition to the rendering pipeline, not a replacement for Super Resolution or Frame Generation.

Official support is currently limited to GeForce RTX 50 and RTX Spark devices. Hogwarts Legacy follows on November 5, 2026. Metro 2033 and Last Light Redux also support it already, with the most noticeable improvement on character faces.

FSR 4.1 and Redstone From AMD

FSR Redstone launched in December 2025 through Adrenalin driver 25.12.1, exclusively for the Radeon RX 9000. The package includes machine learning-based frame generation, ray regeneration, and radiance caching. All of these ML features require the RDNA 4 architecture.

In the DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS contest, AMD has only now expanded support through Adrenalin driver 26.10.1. This driver, released October 20, 2026, brings FSR 4.1 to the Radeon RX 6000. AMD says the model is optimized from the 6900 series down to the 6400 class. That is ahead of the original target of early 2027.

Support also covers Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400, as well as Ryzen AI 9 300 and 400. Owners of Ryzen Z2 handhelds need a driver from the device maker, because the standard Adrenalin package does not cover handhelds. Xbox Series X and S are listed as coming soon, with no release date. There are no independent benchmarks for the RX 6000 yet.

FSR 4 passed 300 games at the end of May 2026. AMD’s weak point is frame generation. FSR currently inserts only one generated frame. Slow-motion camera testing in August 2026 found frame pacing problems that cause stutter.
