Controller vs. Keyboard and Mouse for PC Games: Which Is Better in 2026?

Controller vs. keyboard and mouse for PC games is still debated in 2026. See how they compare by genre, aim assist, and Steam usage data.

The debate over controller vs. keyboard and mouse for PC games is still unsettled as of October 2026. Each input has its own strengths, depending on the genre and play style. PC players are also using gamepads more often than before.

Valve’s data shows this trend. Average daily controller usage on Steam rose from 5 percent in 2018 to as much as 15 percent in 2024, according to Valve’s 2024 report.

Of all controller sessions, 59 percent used an Xbox gamepad, 26 percent used a PlayStation controller, and 10 percent used a Steam Deck. About 42 percent of sessions also used Steam Input, a feature that lets games without official controller support be played with a gamepad.

The Genre Decides the Right Input

The choice between a controller and keyboard and mouse depends heavily on the type of game. Valorant and CS2 are built around keyboard and mouse, and controllers have no real support there. Strategy games like StarCraft also demand more than 200 actions per minute across the whole keyboard.

Controllers suit racing games, platformers, and action RPGs better. Console ports are also usually more comfortable with a gamepad. WASD on a keyboard produces only eight directions, while an analog stick reads movement gradually.

GenreBest inputReason
Tactical FPS (Valorant, CS2)Keyboard and mousePrecise aim and fast peeking
Crossplay battle royaleDepends on combat rangeController is strong at close range, mouse at long range
Strategy and MMOKeyboard and mouseMany hotkeys and cursor control
Racing, platformers, action RPGsControllerAnalog control and a comfortable hand position

Mouse movement maps directly to hand movement, while a controller stick only sets turning speed. That is why the mouse excels at flicks and switching targets. Keyboard and mouse take longer to learn, but their skill ceiling is higher.

Aim Assist and Crossplay Matches

Aim assist keeps controllers competitive in shooters. It slows the crosshair as it nears a target rather than locking onto enemies automatically. It also smooths out imprecise stick input.

In Apex Legends, aim assist strength is 0.4 on PC and 0.6 on console. Controller players have the edge in close-range duels, while mouse players do better at long range. As a result, match outcomes often shift with engagement distance.

FPSAim data as of May 2026 gives a fairly clear picture. About 38 percent of pro Apex players in the ALGS use a controller, and in Fortnite’s FNCS on PC the figure is about 25 percent. In Valorant, every pro player uses keyboard and mouse.

ImperialHal, the most successful Apex player in the ALGS, switched from mouse to controller because of its close-range advantage. Controller share in Warzone has also risen by about 10 percent over two years. These shifts are happening in games that mix both inputs in the same lobby.
