Anime Industry Trends in 2026: From Manga Adaptations to Streaming

Anime industry trends in 2026 show the global market growing fast. See the latest data on manga adaptations, live-action films, and the Netflix vs. Crunchyroll rivalry.

Anime industry trends in 2026 point in a clear direction. The overseas market is now larger than Japan’s domestic market, and manga adaptations keep multiplying. Streaming platforms are competing hard for the rights to air them.

The data in this article comes from a report by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA), a GEM Partners survey, and other industry sources. Market figures can differ between research firms, so the source is named in each section.

The Global Anime Market Grows Thanks to Overseas Viewers

AJA recorded the global anime market at 3.84 trillion yen, or about $25 billion, in 2024. That was up 14.8 percent from the previous year. The largest revenue category was merchandise and licensing.

Overseas revenue reached about $14.25 billion, or 56 percent of the total, and grew 26 percent. The domestic market grew only 2.8 percent. In other words, viewers outside Japan are now the biggest source of growth.

Research firms give different estimates for 2026. GM Insights puts the value at $31.1 billion, while Straits Research cites $46.54 billion. A gap that large likely comes from differences in the segments each firm covers.

In streaming, the market was worth about $7.5 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $14.65 billion by 2030. The projection assumes an annual growth rate of about 11 to 12 percent.

Manga Adaptations on the Big Screen and Streaming

In 2026 anime industry trends, live-action has become an increasingly busy adaptation route. Netflix released the second season of One Piece on March 10, 2026. The third season, titled The Battle of Alabasta, is scheduled for 2027.

The live-action Sakamoto Days film opened in Japan on April 29, 2026, during Golden Week. Blue Lock also has a live-action film scheduled for release in summer 2026.

Look Back, an adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot manga, is directed by Hirokazu Koreeda. The live-action version of Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters Per Second premiered at the Busan International Film Festival this year. These titles show that adaptations are no longer limited to the action genre.

Netflix and Crunchyroll Compete for Viewers

The GEM Partners 2026 Anime Global White Paper surveyed about 15,000 people in 15 countries. Netflix was the most popular anime platform in seven of the nine major regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Brazil. These results apply outside Japan and China.

Netflix logged 8.9 billion hours of anime viewing in 2025. More than half of its 325 million subscribers watched anime that year. In January 2026, Netflix announced a major partnership with the studio MAPPA.
